Coat: Smooth, Wiry

How often should a Kromfohrlander be groomed?

The Kromfohrlander's coat requires regular attention to maintain its texture and appearance. For the wiry type, weekly carding helps remove dead hair that tends to cling rather than shed naturally. Use a light slicker brush gently to avoid damaging the coat. Handstripping every 8 to 12 weeks is recommended to preserve the wiry texture and vibrant color, especially in white and brown or tan combinations. Smooth-coated Kromis need less maintenance but still benefit from weekly brushing to keep their coat healthy. - Card coat weekly to remove dead hair - Use slicker brush lightly and gently - Handstrip wiry coats every 8–12 weeks - Check ears and trim nails regularly - Bathe only when necessary to avoid drying skin Pro tip: Handstripping keeps the wiry coat looking fresh and prevents dullness, so schedule it seasonally for best results.

About the Kromfohrlander

The Kromfohrlander, often called the Kromi, traces back to post-World War II Europe. It began with a stray dog named Original Peter, found by American soldiers and later bred in Germany. This breed blends traits from Wire Fox Terriers and possibly Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, resulting in a unique, compact companion. Kromis stand out with their short, wiry or smooth coats, usually white with brown or tan markings. They weigh between 20 and 35 pounds, making them a medium-small dog. Kromfohrlanders are affectionate and form strong bonds with their families. They can be reserved around strangers but rarely bark excessively. Their terrier heritage gives them a lively curiosity and some stubborn streaks, so consistent training is key. They adapt well to family life and usually get along with other pets, though their prey drive means supervision around small animals is wise.
