Coat: Thick

How often should an Artois Hound be groomed?

The Artois Hound’s thick double coat sheds heavily in spring and fall. Brush twice a week to keep loose hair down, and switch to daily brushing during shedding seasons. Use an undercoat rake on dense patches to pull out dead fur without damaging the coat. Bathe every 6 to 8 weeks, making sure to dry thoroughly to prevent skin issues. Avoid shaving the coat; it protects the dog’s skin and regulates temperature. Keep an eye on the dark fawn color for any dirt buildup, especially around the paws and belly after outdoor time. - Brush 2× weekly, daily in heavy sheds - Use undercoat rake on thick areas - Bathe every 6–8 weeks - Dry coat completely after baths - Don’t shave the double coat Pro tip: Schedule a professional de-shed treatment every 6 to 8 weeks to keep shedding manageable and coat healthy.

About the Artois Hound

The Artois Hound is a sturdy, medium-large scent hound with a thick, short coat in a solid tri-color dark fawn. This breed traces back to 15th-century France, prized by nobility for its sharp nose and hunting skill. It’s built for stamina and tracking, originally chasing small game but capable of following deer or boar. Artois Hounds carry a strong prey drive and a bold, tenacious spirit. They’re friendly with people and other dogs but can be stubborn. They need firm, consistent training and plenty of activity to stay balanced. This rare breed is not for those wanting a quiet lap dog.
